Chengdu Hidden 2-Day Itinerary: Ancient Town Charm and Mountain Landscapes Without the Crowds
If it’s your first time in Chengdu, you’ve probably heard of Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli Street. But if you prefer quiet ancient towns, riverside walks, and nature escapes, this lesser-known 2-day Chengdu itinerary offers a slower, more authentic Sichuan experience—without overwhelming crowds or high costs.
This route is perfect for travelers looking for off-the-beaten-path Chengdu travel, scenic photography, and relaxed local life, all within easy reach of the city.
As a local Chengdu travel agency, we design flexible, small-group and private tours like this for travelers who want to explore beyond the usual highlights.
Day 1: Pingle Ancient Town – Stone Streets and Riverside Slow Life
Instead of entering from the busy main gate, start your visit at Pingle Ancient Town South Gate. Walk into Badian Street, a quiet lane filled with late-Qing and early Republican-era buildings. Bougainvillea climbs the old walls, and in the afternoon sunlight the whole street feels timeless—ideal for photography.
For lunch, stop by a local favorite, Zhangji Milk Soup Noodles. A bowl costs around RMB 12–15 and features a pork-bone broth simmered for hours. It’s mild, comforting, and very kid-friendly—perfect for travelers who don’t want spicy food in Chengdu.
In the afternoon, stroll along the Baimo River and rent a traditional covered wooden boat (about RMB 50 per hour, fits up to three people). As you drift downstream, you’ll see stilted riverside houses and ancient banyan trees—some over a hundred years old—leaning toward the water.
At sunset, head to Leshan Bridge, a Qing Dynasty stone arch bridge and one of the best sunset spots in the town. The golden light, rising cooking smoke, and slow river flow offer a scene far more atmospheric than crowded tourist streets.
Stay overnight in a riverside guesthouse (around RMB 150–200 per person). Choose a room with a balcony if possible—the sound of flowing water makes it far more peaceful than city hotels. Avoid accommodations directly on the main street, which can be noisy at night.

Day 2: Tiantai Mountain – Waterfalls, Forest Trails, and Wildlife
After breakfast, drive about one hour from Pingle Ancient Town to Tiantai Mountain Scenic Area, a great choice for Chengdu nature tours and light hiking.
Enter via the visitor center and take the shuttle bus to Denglean (around RMB 20). From here, begin a gentle hike through bamboo forests. The trail is well maintained, shaded, and comfortable even in summer.
Your first highlight is Xiangshuitan Waterfall. While not extremely tall, it’s wide and powerful, creating cool mist. On sunny days between 10:00–11:00 a.m., rainbows often appear near the viewing platform. Below the waterfall, there are shallow streams where travelers with children can safely play—bring non-slip shoes.
Continue toward Zhengtiantai, where you may encounter wild macaques. They’re accustomed to humans but should not be fed—feeding wildlife is prohibited and may result in fines. Quiet observation and photography are recommended.
Near Zhengtiantai, you’ll find a Highland Rhododendron Garden, blooming from April to May. Outside flowering season, it becomes a wide green meadow—perfect for resting or a light picnic.
Plan to leave the mountain before evening (around 5:00 p.m.), as the roads are winding. On the way back, stop at a local farmhouse restaurant such as Tiantai Renjia. Their stir-fried cured pork with bamboo shoots is a regional specialty, mildly seasoned and very satisfying after a day outdoors.
