No Driving Needed · Budget-Friendly · Perfect for Solo Travelers & Students
Traveling from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by public transportation is easier than many first-time visitors expect. If you don’t want to drive in the mountains, this 3-day Chengdu–Jiuzhaigou itinerary helps you explore the famous alpine lakes, waterfalls, and Tibetan towns comfortably and affordably.
With an average budget of around RMB 600–650 per person, this route is ideal for solo travelers, students, and backpackers visiting Sichuan for the first time.
Day 1: Chengdu → Songpan Ancient Town → Jiuzhaigou
Start early in the morning and head to Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station. Take a long-distance bus to Jiuzhaigou (approx. 8 hours, RMB 180 per person). The bus usually stops for about one hour at Songpan Ancient Town, a historic Tibetan gateway town on the plateau.
Songpan Ancient Town has no entrance fee. Walk along stone-paved streets, explore old city walls, and see traditional temples that reflect over 1,000 years of history. Near the bus stop, you’ll find freshly grilled yak meat skewers—tender, smoky, and very affordable.
By around 3:00 PM, arrive at the Jiuzhaigou Valley entrance area. Take a short taxi ride to Zhangzha Town, the main accommodation area near the park.
Stay at a local Tibetan-style guesthouse (about RMB 180 per night), within walking distance of the Jiuzhaigou Visitor Center.
In the evening, explore Zhangzha’s food street. Try Tibetan yogurt, roasted lamb, and local potato snacks. Dinner usually costs around RMB 50 per person and is filling after a long travel day.

Day 2: Full Day Jiuzhaigou National Park Tour
Wake up early and arrive at the Jiuzhaigou Visitor Center before 8:00 AM. Purchase your park ticket (RMB 169) + shuttle bus pass (RMB 90).
Take the sightseeing bus directly to Long Lake, the highest lake in the park. Walk along the wooden boardwalk for panoramic views of deep-blue water and surrounding snow-capped peaks.
Next, visit Five-Color Lake, one of the most photographed spots in Jiuzhaigou, known for its turquoise, emerald, and sapphire tones under sunlight.
For lunch, you can eat at Nuorilang Service Center (buffet around RMB 68) or bring snacks from town to save money.
In the afternoon, explore Zechawa Valley, including the stunning Five-Color Pool and the powerful Nuorilang Waterfall, the widest waterfall in China. Exit the park around 5:00 PM and return to your guesthouse to rest.
Day 3: Jiuzhaigou → Chengdu
Enjoy a relaxed morning. Around 9:00 AM, browse local shops in Zhangzha Town for souvenirs such as yak beef jerky and highland barley cakes. Most products are vacuum-packed and easy to carry on flights.
At around 10:00 AM, take the return bus from Jiuzhaigou Bus Station to Chengdu (RMB 180). Arrival in Chengdu is usually around 6:00 PM, marking the end of your journey.
