Jiuzhaigou + Huanglong 3 Days 2 Nights Self-Drive Itinerary

The Ultimate Scenic Loop from Chengdu

If you want to experience Jiuzhaigou National Park and Huanglong Scenic Area in one trip, this 3-day 2-night self-drive loop from Chengdu is one of the most efficient and rewarding routes. With crystal-clear alpine lakes, colorful calcium pools, and authentic Tibetan village stays, this itinerary is perfect for travelers who prefer flexibility, nature, and in-depth exploration.

This route is especially popular among travelers booking private tours from Chengdu, and it can also be arranged with a local Chengdu travel agency for those who prefer a driver-guide or customized itinerary.

Day 1: Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou → Zhangzha Town

Depart from Chengdu at around 6:00 AM, driving via the Chengdu–Mianyang–Jiuzhai Expressway and the Jiuhuang Airport Highway. Total highway tolls are approximately RMB 230 per vehicle. The drive takes about 7–8 hours with scenic mountain views along the way.

Around noon, stop at Songpan Ancient Town for lunch. A bowl of yak meat soup (about RMB 35) paired with a local highland barley cake is filling and perfect for cooler mountain weather.

Arrive at Jiuzhaigou Visitor Center around 3:00 PM. Stay overnight in Zhangzha Town, the main accommodation area near the park entrance.
Recommended stay: a Tibetan-style guesthouse, around RMB 180 per night, within walking distance of the park. Many family-run guesthouses offer warm hospitality, clean rooms, and even homemade butter tea.

In the evening, explore Zhangzha Town and enjoy local Tibetan cuisine such as:

Hand-grabbed yak beef

Tibetan yogurt with honey

Highland barley wine

These experiences give travelers a taste of authentic ethnic culture, often included in Jiuzhaigou cultural tour packages.

Day 2: Jiuzhaigou National Park → Huanglong

Start early and enter Jiuzhaigou National Park before 8:00 AM.
Tickets:

Entrance ticket: RMB 169

Eco shuttle bus: RMB 90

Take the shuttle to Long Lake, the highest lake in the park, then continue to Five Flower Lake, famous for its turquoise, green, and deep-blue layers. Under sunlight, the colors are incredibly vivid—no photo filters needed.

At noon, have lunch at Nuorilang Service Center (buffet around RMB 68), or bring snacks if you prefer.

In the afternoon, visit highlights such as:

Pearl Shoal Waterfall (featured in classic Chinese TV shows)

Nuorilang Waterfall, the widest waterfall in Jiuzhaigou

Five Color Pond, small but visually stunning

Exit the park around 3:00 PM and drive about 1.5 hours to Huanglong Scenic Area. Stay overnight near Huanglong in a local guesthouse (around RMB 250 per night). Many accommodations offer floor heating, which is very welcome due to the higher altitude.

Day 3: Huanglong Scenic Area → Chengdu

After breakfast, head to Huanglong Scenic Area.
Tickets:

Entrance ticket: RMB 170

Cable car: RMB 80 (highly recommended)

Take the cable car up to the main area, then walk downhill along wooden boardwalks to conserve energy. Huanglong is famous for its terraced calcium pools, which appear in shades of blue, green, yellow, and white—often compared to natural jade terraces.

Lunch is available inside the park (buffet around RMB 78). Begin the return drive to Chengdu around 1:30 PM and arrive in the evening.
